He was called William Boyd "of Sherrigrim" near Cookstown, County Tyrone, Northern Ireland.
But he was a relative of the Boyds of the "townland of Knocknavaddy, in the Parish of Desertcreat, Electorial District of Rock," County Tyrone.
See The Descendants and Ancestors of James Boyd and Nancy Wier (1991) by William Riley Boyd.

His birthdate is sometimes found incorrectly as 25 Sep 1766, which is the baptism date of his son William Boyd Jr.

Records of "Carland Presbyterian Church Parish of Donaghmore" (a couple of miles from Rock):
"Baptisms.
"25th Sep 1761 - William Boyd son of William Boyd of SHIRAGRIM townland"
"25th September 1766 - William Boyd son of William Boyd(,) Shirgrim
(First William must have died, as it was custom to name a child for a child who died)"
Without seeing the original records from which these abstracts were taken, it is impossible to know if the two entries are a double entry to correct a possible misreading of 1761/1766 or if there were in fact two different baptisms both on the same day five years apart. (More likely the former.)

4th of August 1783: The marriage of William Boyd's brother "James Boyd of this congregation" to "Agnes" (Nancy) "Weir" (Wier) was also recorded in the Carland Presbyterian Church Parish as occurring at the Cookstown Presbyterian Church, the bride's church.
James Boyd was William's younger brother, born circa 1758, or about 10 years younger, and married about age 25.

Townland: Sherrigrim
Barony: Dungannon Middle
Civil parish: Donaghenry
"Poor Law"(or Poor house district per 1845 law): Cookstown

IMMIGRATION:
Landed at Charleston, S.C., Oct. 31, 1804, aboard the "Lady Washington," which sailed from Belfast, Northern Ireland, in August. Moved to Illinois in 1820.

BURIAL:
Some online references say he died in South Carolina circa 1815, sources not stated. Others show him as dying in Randolph County, Illinois. Exact burial site uncertain but possibly in Kelly Cemetery, Evansville, in Randolph County.
A family history compiled by Ada Torrens infers he and wife Margaret settled first in Abbeville Dist., S.C., and then settled in Laurens County, and some inferences indicate that they probably died there although others say they went with their two sons and two daughters when they moved to Randolph County, Illinois. (see Ada Torrens ms.; Portrait and Biographical Sketches of St. Clair County, Illinois, p. 631, states their son and wife removed to Ill. but does not say they did also.)

Brother of James Boyd of Knockavaddy (c1758-1845) who married Nancy Wier, aunt of William Boyd's son-in-law Robert Weir/Wier who married Jane Boyd. Their sister Jane Boyd Hamilton, was the mother of Mary Hamilton Wier, wife of Nancy Wier Boyd's brother James Wier.

Another younger brother or nephew may have been Robert Boyd (c1763/73-1817) said to have married Mary Robb (or Roff) (1873-1857) in Belfast, moved to Philadelphia by 1793 and died in Washington County, Pennsylvania, the parents of Elizabeth Boyd Braden. Boyd-Hamilton-Wier family letters in the 1860s-90s talk about the Bradens of Philadelphia being cousins and the beneficiaries of a wealthy bachelor uncle Boyd who settled a Philadelphia. (See Findagrave 80844134 and 82089175.)
