Obituary - The Saint Louis Christian Advocate
Samuel W. was born in Hopkins County, Kentucky on September13, 1808. He was one of the early settlers of Missouri and was in the government employ assisting in the survey of the great portion of the Northwest Missouri. He was highly respected Methodist family, having 3 brothers Benjamin, James and Thomas A. who were itinerant ministers of the MECS. Rev. Benjamin Ashby was at one time a P.E. of the Missouri Conference. Rev. Thomas Ashby at the time of his death, was a member of the Tennessee Conference. When 31 years of age , Brother Ashby married to Miss Mary J. Peery. He survived his first wife by 16 years. His second wife lives to mourn his death. Death date 3 June 1872.

Samuel Woodson Ashby was the son of Henry and Judith (Shumate) Ashby. He married Mary Jane Peery on February 5, 1839 in Livingston County, Missouri (Vol. A Pg 7). She was the daughter of George and Jane Campbell Thompson Peery.

To this union ten children were born Judith Ann, William Henry, Sarah Elizabeth, Thomas Fielding, Tabitha Jane, Mary Frances, Louisa Jane, Narcissa Assandra, Bella Jane and Samuel.

Mary died giving birth to their tenth child Samuel on November 15, 1854. Both are buried in the George Peery Cemetery by her parents.

Four children died young they are Louisa Jane, Narcissa Assandra, Bella Jane and Samuel are buried in the George Peery Cemetery with their mother Mary, according to the Ashby Bible. We were there in 2013 and found no cemetery stones for the children.

On Mary's stone it has the dates and burial for Samuel on it and said he is buried in Franklin, Franklin County, Nebraska

In the 1850 Census Samuel and Mary (Peery) Ashby are living in Livingston County, Missouri. With the following children
Judith, William, Tabitha, Sarah and Thomas.

On November 2, 1856 Samuel W. Ashby married Mrs. Mary Brown in Grundy County, Missouri. (Vol. A Pg 165)

The family is living in Grundy County, Missouri in the 1860 Census. With the following children Judith, William, Tabitha, Sarah, Thomas.

Samuel and his new wife Mary have a son James one year old. It is not known what happens to James, as he is not on the 1870 Census. Mary (Brown) Ashby's daughter Margaret age 16 years is also living with them.

In the 1870 Census Samuel and Mary are living in Colfax, DeKalb County, Missouri. With his daughter Sarah (Ashby), her husband Anderson Smith and their two children Woodson and Anne.

Samuel and his wife Mary move to Nebraska in 1870, along with his daughter Judith and her husband Joseph Peery. Both apply for a Homestead Patent in Franklin County, Nebraska.

Samuel died before the Homestead was final, the land going to his widow Mary. (T2,R4W, Sec 31)

The first death that occurred in the county was that of Samuel W. Ashby, who died June 2, 1872, aged sixty-three years, at the old town of Franklin.

Samuel W. Ashby: Samuel Ashby migrated to Missouri with his widowed mother and thirteen brother and sisters in 1818. He grew up on the edge of civilization. When old George Peery drove his wagon into the county north of Livingston and unloaded his sixteen children, Samuel's future bride Mary Jane Peery was among them.
After Samuel and Mary Jane were married they went out alone and settled on a tract of land where they built their home. Mary had nine children before her death at age 33 years. Judith Ann(Mrs. Joseph Peery) was one of these children. Later Samuel married the widow Brown. In 1870 both Samuel Ashby and Joseph Peery took homesteads near Franklin (T2,R4W, Sec 31)
