Friday, 3 July 1902
Grandma Mary Ashby who was a resident of this beautiful valley before Franklin was thought of, died at the home of her grandchildren near Los Angles, California. Died last Sunday morning at the ripe old age of 86 years. Grandma Ashby was a most lovable character and the world is a better by reason of her long and active life.
************************************************************
Mary Brown Ashby was the mother of Margaret Ellen (Brown) Ashby and mother-in-law to Daniel Leeper Ashby. Mary Brown was a widow when she married Daniel Leeper Ashby's, uncle Samuel W. Ashby on November 2, 1856 in Grundy County, Missouri. (Vol A Pg 165)
Please note it is not known at this time Mary's maiden name before marrying Mr. Brown.

The 1860 Census shows the family is living in Grundy County, Missouri. Samuel and Mary have a son James one year old. Her daughter Margaret Brown is living with them age 16 years. It is not known what happens to James, as he is not on the 1870 Census.

The 1870 Census Samuel and Mary are living in Colfax, DeKalb County, Missouri. With his daughter Sarah (Ashby), her husband Anderson Smith and their two children Woodson and Anne.

Samuel and Mary move to Nebraska and apply for a Homestead Patent in Franklin County, Nebraska. Samuel died in 1872 before the Homestead was final, the land going to his widow Mary. She later sells their homestead and moved to California to live with her daughter Margaret (Brown) and Daniel Lepper Ashby.
