OBITUARY - JOHN HAROLD IRISH (Forest County Republican, 1987)

John Harold Irish, lifelong resident of Laona and former postmaster there, died at St. Mary's hospital in Rhinelander on October 26, 1987 at the age of 74. Reverend John Cerkas will officiate at the Funeral Mass today (Thursday) at 10 am at St. Leonard's Catholic church in Laona, where visitation was held Wednesday from 4 to 8 pm with a prayer service at 6:60. Interment will be in the Laona cemetary. Halverson-Suminski Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

The son of Chester John and Mary Anna (Betker) Irish was born in Laona on February 27, 1913. He attended Laona grade school and high school, Carroll College and Central State Teacher's College in Stevens Point, graduating with a bachelors degree in education in 1938. He worked in a logging camp for the Connor Company and taught school in Laona for five years. In 1945 he was appointed postmaster in Laona and served until 1974. He was an EMT and a member of the Laona Rescue Squad, a past member of St. Leonard's Holy Name Society, a past member of the Laona School Board and a member of the Wisconsin Valley Library Board. He was a lifetime member of St. Leonard's Catholic church.

He married the former Marian Morency on June 20, 1940 at St. Leonard's Catholic church. Mr. Irish is survived by his wife, Marian; a daughter, Mrs. David (Mary Ann) Zoch, Sheboygan; a son, Michael John (Deb) Irish, Stevens Point; a brother, Harold C. (Mary) Irish, Shawano and six grandchildren. His parents preceded him in death.
