OBITUARY - HAROLD C. IRISH (Forest County Republican, 1995)

Former Laona resident Harold C. Irish died Monday, May 22, 1995 at his home in Shawano, Wisconsin at age 76.

Born in Laona in 1919, Harold was the son of Chester J. and Mary A. (Betker) Irish. He was a graduate of Laona High School and the University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point. He was a decorated Marine Corps fighter pilot who saw action in the South Pacific during World War II. He also served as an operational training instructor stationed at Jacksonville Naval Air Station and attained the rank of Major. After the war Harold returned to Laona where he built and operated the Laona Airport. On August 19, 1947 he married the former Mary L. Murphy. In 1955 they moved to Shawano where Harold taught science at Franklin Middle School until his retirement in 1978. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking and spending time with his family at their cottage on Silver Lake.

Survivors include: one daughter, Jane M.(Tom) Daul of Green Bay; two sons, James P. of Shawano and John C. (Lynne) of Flagstaff, Arizona; four grandchildren, Jeremy P. Irish, Kristin, Joshua and Zachary Daul. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Harold M., and a brother John H. Irish.

Reverend John Cerkas will officiate at the funeral Mass on Friday, May 26th at St. Leonard's Catholic chruch, Laona. Visitation will begin at noon and services will be held at 1 pm with burial in the Laona cemetery.
