Funeral services for Chester John Irish, 78, a long-time resident of Laona and former Forest County highway commissioner, were held Saturday at St. Leonard's Catholic church at Laona. Rev. S.A. Stern officiated at the 9 a.m. rites and burial was in the Laona Cemetery. Mr. Irish died Wednesday, July 8, at St. Mary's hospital in Rhinelander. The body lay in state at Halverson Funeral Home, Crandon, after 2 p.m. Friday, where a Rosary was recited at 7:30 p.m. Pallbearers included Dale Slimmer, Willie Karl, Ivan Calhoun, Herman Lang, Ernest Hoffman and Elmer Gayhart.
The son of Henry W. and Effie (Starks) Irish was born September 3, 1891 at Bryant. He came to Laona as a youth in 1899 and engaged in farming and logging in the area. He served as town chairman and town assessor for Laona in past years in addition to serving a number of years as county highway commissioner. He was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in Chicago in 1952.
He married the former Mary Anna Betker October 30, 1911, and she died March 29, 1964. A sister, Myrtle G. Tomany-Milham also preceded him in death. Survivors include two sons, John H. (Marian) of Laona and Harold C. (Mary) of Shawano; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
