The son of Henry & Harriet (Stipe) Hipple, in 1860 he was a laborer living in Middletown, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.

A Civil War veteran, he served two terms of service:
1. Enlisted at the overstated age of eighteen in Middletown August 6, 1862, mustered into federal service at Harrisburg August 12 as a musician with Co. H, 127th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 29, 1863.
2. Enlisted at the now correctly stated age of eighteen and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg March 24, 1864, as a musician with Co. A, 187th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company August 3, 1865.

He married Anna Mary Sohn in 1866, but they apparently had no children. A carpenter after the war, he also served terms as burgess of Middletown and justice of the peace. Cause of his death is listed as "paralysis, malnutrition & sepsis." March 29 is also reported as his birthday.
