Death of James A. Lathrop

"Mr. James A. Lathrop, 64 years of age, suddenly died from heart failure on Sunday night, while he was sitting at the super table. Mr. Lathrop had been in bad health for some time, but his death was entirely unexpected by his many friends. He had apparently been in his usual health until he dropped dead.

"He was a Confederate veteran, and a member of the Stonewall Camps of C.C. V. He served throughout the civil war in the First South Carolina regiment. Mr. J.B. McFadden commander of the camp when served during that memorable struggle with Mr. Lathrop in speaking of him said: "A braver man never lived" - a fitting tribute to a man who had served in this renowed regiment.

"The funeral service swill be held on Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the St. James Methodist church. The interment will be at Westview cemetery. Members of Camp Stonewall Jackson. C.C. V are urged to pay a last tribute to their gallant comrade by attendance" - Atlanta Journal, 11th.

Mr. Lathrop was a native of this county, having moved from the county several years ago. He was a brother of Mr. Geo. D. Lathrop of Newberry county.

The herald and news (Newberry, S.C.)

Sexton records states he was 64 years, 10 months, 15 days old. So that puts birth about Feb or Mar of 1843.
