In 1920 she and her parents and six siblings lived on a farm they owned, mortgage free, in Jackson Township, Greene County, IN.

In 1930 she and her parents and six siblings--but not the same six as in 1920--lived there. They did not have a radio.

In 1940 she and her husband and their two children lived in a place they were renting for three dollars a month in the same township. Wayne worked as a school bus driver for the township, with an income in 1939 of $636 for 40 weeks of work.

Berniece M. Fines, 86, of Merrillville, passed away Thursday, Feb. 2, 2006.

Survivors include: her three children, Charlotte and her husband Walter Hartman of Griffith, Darrell Fines and his wife Sarah of Griffith, and Janet and her husband Ronald Balka of Colorado Springs, Colo.; seven grandchildren, Douglas Hartman and his wife Marie, Dawn and her husband David Turner, LeeAnn and her husband Jim Boyles, Terry Fines and his wife Laura, Raymond Fines, Russell Balka and his wife Macee, and Clifton Balka and his wife Laura; nine great-grandchildren; three sisters, Lucille Wade, Wyona Enisberger, and Mae and her husband Jim Carter; and cousins, Wanetta Holmes, John Holmes, and Jimmy Holmes.

She was preceded in death by her husband Wayne and brothers and sisters, Quince, Wilford, Wayne, Jesse, and Daniel Ashcraft, Hazel Trueblood and Anna Horn.

Funeral service was Monday at Kuiper Funeral Home in Highland with Randy Harrison, minister, officiating. Burial followed at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens in Schererville.
