In 1930 she and her parents and six siblings lived on a farm they owned in Jackson Township, Greene County, IN. They did not have a radio.

In 1940 she and her parents and two siblings lived there. Their home was valued at $150. Her father also worked as a trustee for the township, with an income in 1939 of $600 for 52 weeks of work.

Thelma Mae (Ashcraft) Carter, 83, of Owensburg, Indiana and Sebring, Florida passed away on Friday September 27, 2013 at 11:45 P.M. at IU Health Bloomington Hospital with her loving family at her bedside.

Mae was born in Koleen, Indiana on December 1, 1929 to Jesse Hugh Ashcraft and Freeda Mae Roberts Ashcraft. She was the eleventh child in the family. She and James L. Carter were united in marriage on July 31, 1948 in Spencer, Indiana.

Survivors include her husband James, two children, Bonnie Lou Carter Holtsclaw (Darel) of Owensburg and Randy Jim Carter (Carolyn) of Bloomington, three grandchildren, Bradley James Holtsclaw of Cincinnati, Ohio, Melissa Jill Fields of Florence, SC and Marie Carter of Bloomington, one step granddaughter Amanda Poore (Stinson), eight great grandchildren and one great great grandson, one sister Wynona Ernsberger of Shelby, Ohio.

Preceded her in death was her parents, son Ritchie Tim Carter, sisters: Hazel, Lucille, Anna and Berniece and her brothers; Quince, Jack, Jesse, Daniel and Wayne.

She was a member of the Solsberry Eastern Star and a charter member of Xi Nu Chapter of Delta Theta Tau Sorority, Inc.
