Bert was born at 28 Norman Road, then in Ilford Essex, the youngest child and only son of Herbert James and Minnie Norris.
He did his National Service in the Army -Private, Service No. 19154312 in the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers, and served in Palestine in 1948

He married June Rosemary Allen whom he met at the wedding of his cousin Irene Mayes
