Biography[5]

Luther Doolittle... was born Jan 14, 1764 in Warwick, MA; was Lieut. in Continental Army. After the war he went to Vt. and m. Nov 13, 1781 Mary (dau of Paul) Hazelton, of Townshend... In 1784 he was one of a company from Townshend who marched to Brattleboro to withstand the Yorkes. He and Mary settled in Powell, VT. In 1794 they were one of 20 families that moved from Powell to Nelson in Madison Co., N.Y., when it was an unbroken forest. One of the first taverns of the town was kept by Luther Doolittle in the north end quarter about 1800. It was not a very pretentious institution, being a log structure with a barn attached.

As early as 1800 many of this company from puritanical New England felt the want of religious services, as the Sabbath was fast degenerating into a day of amusements. Luther Doolittle was among the first to take the matter in hand and started meetings for worship...

Luther was for a time Justice of the Peace. In 1816 accompanied by his s. Amzi he went out to Ill. to take up land. While on his way back alone on foot to Little Valley, N.Y., to get his family, he died at the home of one Dr. Ducky in Ill. or Ind., August 25, 1821. He had left s. Amzi in Ill. When Luther was taken ill he was 3 days finding a house...

Eventually his son Amzi returned to New York to visit his family with his wife and child. He found out his father had been reported to have died 12 years earlier on his way back to get his family.
