Loyal "Schoonie" L. Schoonover, 89, formerly of Canton, passed away Tuesday, June 10, 2014, at his son's house in Wee-Ma-Tuk, near Cuba, Ill., where he was residing.
He was born Sept. 17, 1924, in Farmington, Ill., to Jesse and Tilda (Failer) Schoonover. Schoonie married Irene Stammer in Jackson, Minn., on Oct. 17, 1948. She survives.
He is also survived by his two sons, Jeffrey (Ann) Schoonover of Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, and Edwin Schoonover of Wee-Ma-Tuk.
Schoonie was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Charles Schoonover; and three sisters, Carrie Bohm, Ester Schoedal and Ethel Anderson.
Schoonie was a World War II U.S. Army veteran and served in Guadalcanal. He was honorably discharged in April of 1946. He was an electrician at Buckheart Mine, retiring in 1987, after 41 years.
Burial, with military honors, will be in White Chapel Memory Gardens in Canton.
