TOLEDO YOUTH DIES IN RIVER, Girl fails in effort to Save Victim Stunned in Dive.
Believed to have been stunned when his head struck a stone after he dived from the State Dam in the Maumee river, four miles east of Defiance, O., Lawrence Stockmaster, 22, former St. John's University student, who was studying for the priesthood, drowned Sunday.
After Mr. Stockmaster's companion. Helen H. Badman, former, Waite high school student, dived futilely in search for the body, it was recovered by two Defiance youths, James Cameron and Charles Schindler. The body was in the water five minutes. Efforts at resuscitation failed. A large bruise was found on the forehead.
Studied for Priesthood
Mr. Stockmaster, an employee at Tiedtke's store, lived with his parents at 317 Clarence Avenue. He had studied two years for the priesthood and was working to obtain money with which to continue his education.
Miss Badman's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Claude Badman, witnessed the drowning from the river bank. With their daughter and Mr. Stockmaster, They had gone to the river for an outing after Mr. Stockmaster went to their farm home near North Creek. Putnam county for a visit Sunday. They moved from Toledo this summer.
Rites Wednesday
Mr. Stockmaster's body, taken to a Defiance Mor6uary, was brought to the Hoeflinger Mortuary in Toledo Monday.
Mr. Stockmaster is Survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. A. L. Stockmaster; brother, Martin, Frederick, John, James and Richard and sisters, Rita, Theresa and Mr. E. J. Hentges.
Funeral service will be held at 1 AM Wednesday in the Holy Rosary church with burial in Calvary Cemetery.
