Gladys Lydia Fields, 96, died August 18, 2007 at Knute Nelson Memorial Home in Alexandria.
Gladys was born July 12, 1911 in Ruthton to Peter and Lydia (Hansen) Melby. She graduated from Russell High School where she was an avid basketball player. Gladys worked as a clerk for Harry Purdy Grocery Store in Russell after graduation.
On March 25, 1933, she married Earl Hartzell and they lived in Marshall from 1933 to 1947. The family moved to Lynd in 1947 and Gladys operated the Corner Grocery Store there until 1967. Gladys and Earl had six children. Earl died on March 6, 1954.
On June 16, 1956, Gladys married Lester Fields of New London. Gladys and Lester moved to Alexandria in 1967. Gladys worked as a checkout clerk at Olson's Super Market in Alexandria from 1968 to 1975. On July 14, 2006, after 50 years of marriage, Lester passed away after suffering from Alzheimer's.
Gladys played piano for church and other organizations. She was involved in church women's groups, loved to bowl, golf, garden, play cards and board games and was an excellent cook and baker. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, VFW auxiliary, the Garden Club, Royal Neighbors of America, and RSVP (Retired Senior Volunteer Program). She had a wonderful sense of humor, strong faith in God, loved her family and was a friend to many.

She is survived by her children, Donald (Marlene) Hartzell of North Branch; Mary (Phil) Anderson of Windom; Robert (Kay) Hartzell of Leadville, CO; Diane Jamison of Carrington, ND; and Deane (Connie) Hartzell of Nashville, TN; daughter-in-law, Phyllis Hartzell of Benson; 19 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
Gladys was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Earl; second husband, Lester; sister, Lucille Eberle; son, Richard Hartzell; and son-in-law, Warren Jamison.
A funeral service was held August 27 at First Baptist Church in Alexandria with the Reverend Darryl Knappen officiating. Music was provided by pianist, Janet Lensegrav and soloist Patrick Jamison. Interment was held at Evergreen Cemetery with casket bearers being Paul L. Anderson, George Eberle, Roger Maertens, Dean Mortenson, Jon Steinbring and Gary Thoennes. Honorary casket bearers were all of Gladys' grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
