Lucille was born September 13, 1913 to Mr. & Mrs. Peter G. Melby at Ruthton, MN. She lived in Ruthton until school age when she moved to Russell, MN where she attended elementary and high school, graduating in 1931. She later attended and graduated from St. Andrew's Hospital School of Nursing in Minneapolis, MN. She worked as a surgical nurse at St. Andrew's Hospital from 1935-1939. From 1939 to 1944 she was Superintendent of Nurses at the Tyler, MN hospital and lived with her parents in Florence, MN during this period. While working at the Tyler hospital she met Harold Eberle who had been hospitalized from a farm accident where he lost his right leg. She and Harold were married on September 24, 1944 in Florence, MN. After marriage they continued to live in Lake Benton until the fall of 1952 when they moved to Canby, MN. Lucille was the Hospital Administrator of the Canby Community Hospital from 1953 until the time of her death in 1971. She was a member of the R.N. Club, Hospital Auxiliary and First Presbyterian church.
Lucille was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1965 and underwent a radical mastectomy followed by radiation treatments. It was thought that the cancer gone but she kept having cancerous lumps reappear around the incisions from her mastectomy. Eventually the cancer spread to other parts of her body and her health continued to deteriorate. In December of 1970 while at the University of Minnesota hospital she underwent surgery to remove her pituitary gland in her brain. This was experimental surgery and kind of a last ditch effort to halt the growth of the cancer. She returned home to Canby only to have the cancer continue to spread. Lucille passed away on Saturday, March 6, 1971 at the Canby Community Hospital. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, March 9th at the First Presbyterian Church in Canby with the Rev. Robert Oram officiating. Interment was at the Memorial Hill Cemetery at Lake Benton, MN.
