In 1840 Wilson was selected as a delegate to the MS Whig Party convention. Wilson and his sons Henry (H.F.) & Wilson Lafayette (W.L.) were in the C.S.A., Co.D, 1st MS Regiment Light Artillery during the Civil War, serving in the Vicksburg and Mobile campaigns. Wilson's brothers also served in the same regiment.
Wilson was listed as a member in the second "minutes book" of the congregation of Saron Baptist Church which was organized about 1842. He served as the clerk of the Saron Baptist Church for about 30 years. Later the first church in Durant, MS, Union Church, was built on land donated by Wilson (Re: History of Durant, MS, by Doster & Smith, 1965). In 1865 Wilson was selected as the first mayor of the town of Durant, MS.
