Henry F. Sproles was listed as a member in the second "minutes book" of the congregation of Saron Baptist Church which was organized about 1842 near Durant, Ms. During the Civil War Henry served the CSA in Co.D, 1st Mississippi Light Artillery. He rose to the rank of Sergeant. He was wounded at the Battle of Vicksburg and the battle for Mobile Bay, Alabama. On the list of Vicksburg paroled Prisoners of War, he is listed as Sgt "Henry E.Sproles".
After the war, Henry graduated from the Mississippi Southern Baptist Theology Seminary in 1870 becoming a minister and serving at various churches in Mississippi including the Old Saron Church at Durant, the Vicksburg First Baptist Church, and the First Baptist Church in Jackson, Mississippi. Henry was a member of Saron Baptist Church in Holmes Co., Mississippi until 1871. In 1890 he received a D.D. from Mississippi College, Clinton, MS, where he served as the first head of the department of Bible Studies from 1904 to 1905. Henry was listed and his children were named in the "Biographical & Historical Memoirs of Mississippi", Vol. II, by Goodspeed Publishing Co., 1891.
