Railyard Injuries Fatal To Employe of IC

James Grant Abel of Route 9 Horn Lake Road died at 6 a.m. yesterday at Methodist Hospital from injuries received when he slipped from the caboose of an Illinois Central Railroad in the Johnston Yards Monday afternoon. He was 54.

Mass will be said at 10 a.m. tomorrow at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery with Memphis Funeral Home in charge.

Members of the family said Mr. Abel was stepping from the caboose of the train when he slipped in mud and fell. He received a broken neck, punctured lung and other internal injuries as he was pulled by the train.

Officials at the railroad said no one saw the accident an it has not been determined how it happened.

He was a communicant of Sacred Heart Catholic Church at Walls, Miss. He was a veteran of World War II where he served in North Africa and received the Silver Star and Purple Heart.

He leaves his wife, Mrs. Dorothy Tulley Abell of the Horn Lake Road address; two sons, Robert Abel of 3270 Millbranch, Michael Abel stationed in the Army at Fort McClelland at Anniston, Ala.; a daughter, Miss Joyce Abel of the Millbranch address; his mother, Mrs. Robert S. Abel [Mabel Tate Abel], Sr. of 1838 Wynton; three brothers, Bernard D. Abel of Walls, Miss., Charles T. Abel and Robert S. Abel Jr. both of New Orleans.
