The death of Merritt Byam, a native of Lee, occurred at the County Hosptial Monday night. He had been afflicted with asthma for many years, becoming more acute this winter, heart trouble developing, necessitating his removal to the hospital for treatment four weeks ago last Saturday. He was born on August 8, 1839, a son of the late Stillman and Amy Byam. All of his life was spent in Lee, Taberg and Rome. He married Miss Jeanett White in Vienna 61 years ago last Sunday. Her death occurred 25 years ago.

Earlier in life, Mr. Byam was a boatman on the Erie Canal and for years he drove the stage between Taberg and Blossvale. He was a member of the Methodist Church of Lee. Those who remember him in his active days say that he was a kind neighbor and speak of him in highest terms.

Surviving are three daughters and one son, Mrs. William Conrad, Mrs. Nora Carey and Bertha Eisinger and Burton Byam, all of Rome, also nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. The body was removed to the home of Mrs. Conrad, 419 Willett Street.
