RECALLS A TRAGEDY

The death of Adam Heidt at the Middletown asylum, on Thursday, recalls a tragedy which was attended with some remarkable features. Heidt and his son Joseph on Jan, 19, 1892, murdered his brother-in-law, George Markert, near Jeffersonville, Sullivan County. When arrested on suspicion the Heidts made no attempt to deny their guilt, but justified the killing of Markert upon the ground that he had bewitched their cows, used the black art against all their farming work, and had practiced that black art upon them until their lives were in danger.
At the trial Joseph Heidt was sentenced to state prison for life and Adam Heidt was committed to the Middletown asylum until such time as it could be certified that he was sane."
