George C. Smith Jr. a resident of Needham for 55 years died on Sunday, October 17 at Newton Wellesley Hospital.
He was 84 years old.
Born in Boston, George was the son of the late George C. and Mary (Gray) Smith.
Mr. Smith was a World War II United States navy veteran.
He was graduate of The Massachusetts Institute of Technology Class of 1949. A pioneer in the transistor industry, Mr. Smith was a former employee of Raytheon and retired from Micro Semi, which was formally Unitrode. After he retired, George did some consulting work in the transistor industry. A past president of the Charles River ARC, he was also a former member of the Needham Exchange Club.
The beloved husband for 59 years of Ardith L. (Zervas) Smith, he was the loving father of Loraine Lori Lach and her husband Thomas of Dedham, Katherine Smith of Medfield, Martha Marcy Smith and her husband Paul of Millis and Amy Louise Smith of Needham. Grandfather of Paul Jr. and Joshua Smith of Millis, he was the brother of Edith Spence of Needham and the late Katherine Bacon and the brother in law of Audrey Callahan and her husband Herbert of Wellesley and Cynthia Zervas and her late husband Frank of Westwood.
Funeral Services and interment are private.
