RIPE OLD AGE
Death From Pneumonia of Mrs Melissa Van Buren
"Mrs. Melissa VanBuren, one of Toledo's pioneer women, aged 88 years, died yesterday afternoon at 3:30 at the home of her daughter, Mr.s Clara M Hone, 715 Stickney avenue. She was stricken with pneumonia about a week ago, and this and old age were the cause of her death.
Mrs VanBuren was the widow of Henry VanBuren, who came to Toledo from New York state in 1876. They located on the east side where they remained until the death of Mr. VanBuren in 1888, when Mrs. VanBuren took up her residence on this side of the river with her daughter, Mrs. Hone.
Of the eleven children born to Mr. and Mrs. VanBuren eight are living. Two daughters Mrs. Hone and Mrs. Phoebe Burr are residents of Toledo. One son, Mr. Stephen VanBuren lives in Maumee, and the remaining children are located in various parts of New York state.
For 76 years Mrs. VanBuren was a consistent Christian and an active member of the Baptist church. All during her residence in Toledo and until advancing years prevented her taking an active part in church affairs, she was one of the foremost workers in the Second Baptist church on the East Side. The funeral services were held this afternoon from the Hone residence and at 3 o'clock M.r Stephen VanBuren left for New York state, taking with him the remains for interment at their old home town of Ballstown near Syracuse. The pallbearers were all relatives of the deceased including Stephen Van Buren, Walter Burr, John VanBuren, Roy Laudenslager...."(copy page ends)
