He was born in Wabash County to Ray Steele and Mary (Swaney) Whitcraft. He married Ruth Stone in 1930. She died in 1970. He then married Helen (Cook) Smith on Aug. 6, 1971. She died Nov. 10, 2005.

He was a 1927 Lincolnville High School graduate. He was a farmer and worked for Wabash County Farm Bureau Co-op for 34 years. He attended Wabash Alliance Church and loved to fish. He also enjoyed taking walks on the beach at Port Aransas, Texas.

Survivors include daughters, Linda (William) Gabel, Wabash, Cherryl (Dennis) Gray, Wabash, and Carolyn (Bill) Nielsen, Tempe, Ariz.; son, Dan L. (and the late Sheila) Smith, Urbana; brothers, James R. (and the late Hazel) Whitcraft, Marion, and Charles E. (Theresa) Whitcraft, Fort Myers, Fla.; 12 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

He also was preceded in death by granddaughter, Karla Smith; great-granddaughter, Sarah Gabel; and three sisters.
