He enlisted in the US Army on December 10, 1940 and served during and after World War II until his discharge on February 8, 1947.
He married Dorothy Mae Adams on July 17, 1943 in Seattle, Washington. They became parents to two children: Ronald and Diana. They later divorced.
Udell enlisted again in the US Army on August 25, 1950. He served during the Korean War until being discharged on Mary 15, 1952.
He married Frances June Johnson on February 5, 1962 in Elko, Nevada. He was step-father to her two children: Steve and Rosemary Murphy.
