Mary was born in Fort Worth, Tarrant County, Texas, to a veteran of World War I. By the time of the 1940 census, she and her family were living in Milam County, Texas. Her brother, S1 Guthrie Fitzhugh Layne, Jr, was killed in the sinking of the USS Houston in 1942. During World War II, Mary served in the Nurse Cadet Corps in 1945. She married George E. Yoakum on Aug. 3, 1946, in Rockdale. Mary was a nurse for Dr. John T. Richards in Rockdale and was a member of St. John's United Methodist Church in Rockdale and Kessler Park United Methodist Church in Dallas. Mary died in Grace Presbyterian Village Nursing Home in Dallas.
