Daniel De Walt (son of Daniel De Walt and Nancy Gray) married Sara Waters of Newberry District, daughter of Philemon Waters, the son of Major Thomas Waters of the Revolution. He was familiarly known as "Ferry Phil" because he operated a ferry on the Saluda River. He was a nephew of Colonel Philemon Waters, an officer of the Revolutionary War and was in the Battle of Eutaw under the command of his uncle. After the battle, he said to his uncle, "Uncle, do you call this a battle of a scrimmage?"
