OBITUARY :
MARVEL N. (BARNEY) HARNE, 48, president and coowner of the Erd Co., Inc., died at 11:15 a.m. Sunday at his home, 505 W. Sixth St. He had been in failing health since being hospitalized last August. Mr. Harne had been critically ill and confined to his bed for the past month.

He was born in Waynesboro, Sept. 18, 1922, son of the late Charles E. and Vallye A. Izer Harne. All his life was lived in Waynesboro.

He was a graduate of the Waynesboro High School with the class of 1940.

During World War II, Mr. Harne served with the naval amphibious forces in the Pacific Theater. While in the Navy he attended Wentworth Institute in Boston and the Diesel Mechanics School in Richmond.

Mr. Harne began his career with the Erd Corporation as a foreman following his discharge from the service in 1946. He was later made vice president of the company and in 1969 he assumed the presidency of the firm when he and his sister, Miss Ethel Harne, purchased the company.

Mr. Harne was also a partner in the H. and H. Window Sales Co., with Ralph O. Hess for 18 years. He incorporated that firm's operations with those of the Erd-Company in 1969.

He and Mrs. Harne were married in January, 1943, and had made their home on West Sixth Street since 1952.

Mr. Harne was a member of the Faith United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the American Legion Post at Greencastle, the American Bowling Congress, the National Rifle Association and the Waynesboro Fish and Game
Association.

In addition to his widow, Mrs. Helen E. Black Harne, he is survived by two sons: Dennis N. Harne, Chambersburg, and Terrance L. Harne, Waynesboro. Also surviving are five grandchildren and these brothers and sisters: Mrs. George Smetzer, Miss Ethel Harne, Mrs. Charles Eyer and Delbert E. Harne, all of Waynesboro; Allen N. Harne, York; Charles E. Harne, Jr., Silver Spring, Md.; Mrs. John Jones, Wilmington, Del., and Mrs. Leon Hoover, Norfolk, Va.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the Grove Funeral Home in charge of the Rev. Howard E. Smith. Burial will be made in Green Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday.
