Clint Payton Dies in Hospital
Failing In health for three years, Ward Clinton (Clint) Payton of 887 E. Morgan St. died this morning at 2 o'clock at the Morgan County Memorial Hospital where he had been a patient since June 7. A Morgan County native, he was born April 19, 1885, the son of Benton and Minnie Stewart Payton Although Mr. Payton spent some of his earlier years In Stinesville, he had lived In this community most of his life. His marriage to Mary Berry took place 56 years ago. The 80-year-old man, who was a member of the Stinesville Christian Church, was employed for many years at the Martinsville Auto Company before going to the Allison Division of General Motors where he worked until retirement In 1953. An avid sports fan, Mr. Payton played on the Methodist Church baseball team In the days of the Church League baseball teams, and managed several amateur baseball clubs in the community.
In addition to Mrs. Payton, he leaves four daughters In Martinsville, Mrs. Leona Hill, Mrs. Viola Garrison, Mrs. Alberta Labertew and Mrs. Katherine Loffer; three sons, Woodrow and Mel Payton, both of Indianapolis, and Fred Payton of Chicago; a brother in Martinsville, C. W. (Buck) Payton, and a sister Vance Forbes of Indianapolis. Twenty-one grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren also survive him.
Funeral services will be Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Cure and Hensley Chapel, with burial In Greenlawn Cemetery. Friends are Invited to call at the funeral home after 7 o'clock this evening.
