Harold (Hap) Stelljes, 78
Harold Lee Stelljes passes away Sunday, Oct. 2, 2011, at Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center in Spokane.
Hap was born to Fred and Lydia Stelljes Oct. 4, 1936 in Lewiston. He was the youngest of their four children. His sister, Mildred Kromm, and brother, Debert (Bud) Stelljes preceded him in death.
Hap married Valerie Frank March 17, 1956, and they had four daughters. They later divorced in 1964.
On May 26, 1967, Hap married Mary Ann Roe. They were married for almost 44 years before she passed away in February 2011.
Hap started work at the Camas Prairie Railroad in 1956 as a switchman. He would take all of us kids to work once in a while. We looked forward to wearing our striped overalls and blowing the train whistle.

Hap and Mary Ann enjoyed hunting, fishing and especially camping. They also loved to travel with their many friends. Their Normal Hill was a popular meeting place for everyone. Mary Ann would break out the accordion or play piano. Hap would start a fire and the party would begin. Hap was also a trickster, he loved to play practical jokes on his many friends, co-workers and family. There is a famous story in the family of Hap convincing Mary Ann's daughter that she need to change the air in her tires because it was getting old. The mechanic she took it to got quite a laugh out of that. Once, Hap kidnapped a rubber duck from a friend and sent ransom notes demanding the five dollars or the duck would be sacrificed. He had a wonderful, if twisted sense of humor. He convinced all of the grandkids that he landed the plane on the stick in front of the Lewiston Airport. They now take their children by to show them Grandpa Hap's airplane mastery. He also told them all that he was a part-time brain surgeon. One grandson's teacher called home to say he had gotten very upset this was not possible; he insisted that if Grandpa Hap said he was, then he was, period.

Hap was preceded in death by his parents; brother; sister; his daughter, Denise Roe; his grandson, Ty Wakefield; and their adopted spoiled pets, Humphrey, Hugo, Rembrandt, Lucy, Fred and Mindy.
Hap passed away from a heart attack and when he was asked about heroic measures he stated no, his heart was already broken from losing his wife and grandson.
He is survived by one sister; daughters, Terri Harrington, Debbie Hart, Deanna and Ron Squires, Leslie and Tim Roberts, and Sherry and Ron Lyons; son, Mike and Rosa Roe; 10 granchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.
Cremation has taken place. He was a longtime member of the Lewiston Eagles Lodge, where a celebration of his life will be conducted from noon to 3 p.m. Oct. 15. Bring your stories as we raise a glass.
DOB OCT 4, 1936, LEWISTON, ID - DOD OCT 2, 2011, SPOKANE, WA.
