Marinda Allen was born on the 21st of June 1838 at Jamaica, Queens, New York to Daniel R. Allen and Eliza Martin Allen.
Marinda Allen was baptized a member of the LDS Church in 1847.
In 1853, Marinda Allen was a pioneer. Marinda at age 15 drove a team of Oxen across the plains in the Daniel A. Miller/John W. Cooley Company. She cared for the animals herself.
Her Father and Mother were also in the Daniel A. Miller/John W. Cooley Company. In 1853 heavy rains washed the bridge on the Jordan River connecting West Jordan and East Jordan. Samuel Bateman was a young man assigned to ferry people across the Jordan River until a bridge could be re-built. Samuel reportedly told his friends that he had just ferried his future father-in-law across the Jordan River. His passengers had been Daniel R. Allen and Eliza Martin Allen, their six children, including Marinda Allen.
Marinda married Samuel Bateman on the 27th of Nov. 1854 in West Jordan, Utah. She was sealed to Samuel Bateman in March of 1861 in the Endowment House in Salt Lake. Marinda and Samuel lived on the hill just West of the current Gardner Village, West Jordan,Utah. They built a log cabin and dug out in the hill. At the time there was a water grist mill built by Archibald Gardner in 1851.
A picture of Marinda hangs in Archibald's Restaurant in the current Gardner Village. Marinda was Relief Society President when Archibald Gardner was a Bishop. Marinda was an excellent manager. She raised chickens, ducks and geese. She used the down from these birds for bedticks and pillows. Marinda took in boarders. They gave her worn out clothes. She kept these in a rag bag. Out of the rags she made a layette.
Marinda was a registered midwife and would travel on horseback all over the Salt Lake Valley. Marinda was paid for her midwife work with five dollar gold piece and/or produce. She helped deliver over 700 babies. Marinda was a mother of 13 children. Samuel Bateman died in 1911. Marinda was bed ridden and was taken care of by her daughter, Arminta Egbert. Marinda died on the 18 March 1919 at West Jordan, Utah during an influenza outbreak. She was buried in the West Jordan Cemetery on 22nd of March of March 1919.
