He was born in Eau Claire on February 2, 1929, to Lawrence Rulien and Mary (Scheels).
He attended Ninth Ward Elementary School in Eau Claire. At the age of 13 Ronnie had his first job at the Eau Claire Press Company where he was the head paperboy in the Third Ward.
Ron enlisted with the U.S. Marines at age seventeen, one day after graduation from Eau Claire High School. He served as a forward observer with the Atlantic Fleet. He was honorably discharged August 20, 1948 at the rank of Corporal. He attended the Eau Claire Teachers College for two years. On June 9, 1951 he married Doris Thompson. He worked for Uniroyal Tire Company for 37 years. After retirement he had several part-time jobs including McDonald's.
Ron was an active member of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barber Shop Quartet Singing in America (SPEBSQSA). The most recent quartet he belonged to was Final Edition. He also was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 305, Masonic Temple, and the St. John's Choir. He sat on the advisory board for the Parks and Forestry Commission, the Altoona City Council and the Eau Claire Lake Association. Ron volunteered his time delivering Meals on Wheels.
"Old Ron" had many loves in his life, his family, faith, music, driving his pontoon, and a beer with a good story.
Ron is survived by his wife, Doris Rulien; daughter, Kathy Bareis; and grandson, Kyle (Jessica) Bareis.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Mary Rulien; and brother, Warren Rulien.
A memorial service for Ron and his family will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, March 20, 2014, at St. John's Lutheran Church, 1804 Highland Ave. in Eau Claire, with Pastor Nathan Aaseng officiating. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service on Thursday at the church. Inurnment will take place at Fort Snelling National Cemetery in Minneapolis, MN. Military honors will be conducted in Eau Claire by the VFW Post 305.
