Bernice C. Balitz, age 84, of Hastings, died Dec. 12, 2008, at Regina Medical Center. Bernice was born June 23, 1924, in River Falls, Wis., to Michael and Hattie Clara (Dusek) Goodrich.
Bernice was a graduate of River Falls High School, and St. Josephs Hospital School of Nursing in St. Paul. She worked with Sr. Tabitha at the Regina Memorial Hospital.
Bernice married Robert F. Balitz in September of 1948. She was a member of the Daughters of Isabella, the Regina Hospital Auxiliary, and she spent many years volunteering. Bernice was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Robert, Nov. 27, 2008; and siblings, Donald Goodrich and Margaret Langer.
She is survived by son, James Balitz; daughter, Pattie (David Bear) Wagner; three grandchildren, Kyle, Travis, and Melissa Balitz; and brother-in-law, Clarence Balitz, all of Hastings.
The funeral Mass, with Fr. James Perkl officiating, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 27, 2008, at the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 2035 W.15th St., Hastings, with visitation held one hour prior to the service at church.
The pallbearers are grandchildren, Travis, Kyle, and Melissa Balitz, and caregivers, Kim Freeman, Connie Sylvester, and Kathy Sturdevant. Honorary pallbearers are Bernices daughter, Pattie, and Patties husband, Bear, both of whom provided much care. Additional caregivers are Ginny Johnson, Nancy Stewart, Sheila Hamann, Claire Swenson, Kathie Chandler, and hospice nurse, Dan McDonald.
Interment will be held in the parish cemetery at a later date. Arrangements were handled by the Caturia-Smidt Funeral Home, Hastings, 651-437-9419 or www.caturia-smidtfh.com.
