Philip Vencelovich Cherny was born in the village of Czichemut , Simferopol, Taurida, Crimea, Russian Empire.
His parents were Vencel (Wenceslaus) Cherny and Aloisia Samek. He was the third child of seven children. He left Crimea 20 June 1911, arriving in Boston, Massachusetts on 29 June 1911.
He settled in Dickinson, Stark, North Dakota.
He married Mary Helen Michailenko on 7 Feb 1916.
They had 11 children:
