Greensboro - William A. "Bill" Cheek, 92, passed away Thursday, March 6, 2014 at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital.

A 2:00 p.m. funeral service will be held Monday, March 10 at Forbis and Dick North Elm Street Chapel. Interment will follow at Lakeview Memorial Park.

Bill was born in Warren County, NC on December 7, 1921 to the late William Augusta Cheek and Mattie Best Cheek.

He served his country during WWII in the US Army Air Corp aboard the B26 Reluctant Dragon as an engineer gunner. He flew on 52 bombing missions and was involved in bombing runs on D-Day at Normandy. Following his military service he began a 45 year career in sales with Dixie Sales and Service. He was also a faithful member and served as deacon at Calvary Baptist Church in McLeansville from 1967 until he was no longer able to drive to church. All the kids at his church knew him as the "Candy Man".

Bill was married for 65 years before losing the lifelong love of his life and partner, Erlene Cheek, in 2010.

He is survived by his son, William "Allen" Cheek Jr, and wife Teri of Oak Ridge, NC; granddaughter, Jennifer Graham and husband Michael; grandson Jeff Cheek, 2 great- grandsons, Mason and Hunter Graham, a brother, Holt Cheek and wife Maxine of Elon College, NC and sister, Ethel Reese, of Gibsonville, NC.
