In 1910 he, his wife, their daughter, and a farm laborer, 20-year-old Claud Harvin, lived on a farm they were renting in the same township.

In 1920 he and Ella and their two daughters lived in a house they owned, mortgage free, in Ward 1, Waverly, MO. He worked as a grain shipper, with his own elevator.

In 1930 the four of them lived in a house they were renting for $20 a month at 302 West Cedar Street in Olathe, KS. They did not have a radio. He worked as a well driller for a gas and oil company, Ella as a saleslady in a variety store, and Maxine as a stenographer for a retail lumber company.
