Arlene Aaland was born on a farmstead in Kingsbury County, near Oldham, South Dakota, on January 27, 1930 to Christoffer and Ruth (Edmonds) Aaland. Arlene grew in the Oldham area attending country school, before moving with her family to Carthage when she was in High School.
On March 15, 1949 she was united in marriage to Leo Zapp at Huron, South Dakota. The couple lived in the Carthage area and would have celebrated their 65th Anniversary this year. Arlene was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and Women's Aid and enjoyed sewing, quilting, ceramics and gardening. She loved her husband dearly, as she did her children and grandchildren and will missed but not forgotten with her memories of her life.
Those grateful for having shared in her life included her husband: Leo Zapp of Ramsey, MN; three sons: Leon of Artesian, SD; Randy (Cherene) of Salem, SD; Mark (Ruth) of Jeffersonville, IN; three daughters: Janine (Johnny) Mason of Kenosha, WI; Karen (Kevin) Cich of Surprise, AZ; Donna Kneebone of Ramsey, MN; eight grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; a sister: Ellen of Indianapolis, IN; five sisters-in-law; many nieces, nephews and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two daughters: Connie (1950) and Kim (1979); three brothers: Clarnece, John and Curtis and five sisters: Lillian, Bergette, Alma, Viola and Lulu.
