Sarah Jane Painter, a daughter of Lydia (née Lewallen) and the Rev. Joshua Painter, was born 1832 in Zane Township, Logan County, Ohio. Her father died in 1835 when she was 3, and in 1840 when she was 8 her mother remarried—to John Bishop. Before her own marriage in 1849, Sarah likely lived in the Bishop household, where her younger sister Elmina and older half-brother Jacob Painter were enumerated in 1850.

Sarah Jane Painter and George Vermillion were married on 14 February 1849 in Hancock County, Ohio. The couple were the parents of eight children—

• William Joshua "Will" Vermillion (1849-1927)
• Lydia Ann Vermillion Hungerford (1851-1893)
• Benjamin Vermillion (1852-after 1870)
• John Wesley Vermillion (1855-1946)
• Martha Jane Vermillion (1857-1859)
• Mary Lety Vermillion (1859)
• Elmina Jane Vermillion Parker (1861-1932)
• George Washington Vermillion, III (1862-1954)

The Vermillion family moved from Ohio in the late 1850s, and settled in Douglas County, Illinois. George Vermillion passed away in 1862 at the age of 41; Sarah Vermillion passed away in 1870 at the age of 38.
