Joshua E. Painter, son of Lydia (née Lewallen) and the Rev. Joshua Painter, was born about 1836 (possibly after his father's death) in Zane Township, Logan County, Ohio. His mother remarried in 1840: to John Bishop, a Zane Township farmer.

As a young man, Joshua E. Painter moved to Iowa, possibly following his eldest half-brother, John Wesley Painter, who went to Iowa Territory as a Methodist missionary about 1839.

Joshua Painter and Louisa A. Shelton were married on 2 July 1859 in Davis County, Iowa, and were enumerated in 1860 living with her parents in Bloomfield, the county seat. The couple were the parents of two children:
• John George Painter
• Arminta Elmina Painter Bryce

Joshua Painter worked as a shoemaker, as did his elder half-brother Jacob Painter, who arrived in Iowa after the Civil War. Joshua and Jacob Painter were enumerated in 1870 and 1880 in Bloomfield, a few dwellings apart. In 1880, Joshua's younger half-sister Elizabeth E. Eppley (née Bishop) was also enumerated in Bloomfield.

Joshua E. Painter was last enumerated in the 1885 Iowa state census in Clarinda, Page County, working as a shoemaker. 1891 probate records of his late mother's estate indicate he was then living. He appears to have died in 1893. In the 1893 Iowa state census, Bloomfield, Davis County, "L. A. Painter" was living in the household of her daughter and son-in-law Minta and Geo. W. Bryce. In the 1900 U.S. Census, Louisa A. Painter, a widow in Bloomfield, reported that she had been married for 34 years—presumably the period from 1859 to 1893. (On the same page is the Jacob Painter household.) Louisa A. Painter later remarried twice, surviving those husbands, too. She died in 1919.

Notes

Lydia Painter (née Lewallen) married John Bishop in 1840, and Aaron Oram in 1874; died in 1890. Her probate records listed her next of kin, including: "Joshua Painter | Son | Iowa."
