She was the daughter of settler Christian Bechdel and Maria Schneider who migrated with part of their large family from York to Centre County in 1790. Susanna married Frederick Schenck in Howard in 1799 they were the parents of eleven children including Mary Houser, Barbara Pletcher, Anna Bechdel Emmanuel, Christian, Michael, Frederick, Susanna Bower, Magdalena Pletcher, Leah Speaker, Sarah (Sally) Hall.
