David Mackie was born in Markinch, Fifeshire, the eldest child of Alexander Mackie by his first wife Mary Tomlinson. In 1828 he went to Nova Scotia, and was accompanied by his father Alexander Mackie, stepmother and two half sisters Mary and Christian. It is not known who he had married, but his two known children Andrew and Barbara were born there. By 1833 he was residing at Newbury, Vermont, and by December of 1846, David, his daughter, and his father and family had removed to Rockton Township where David was one of the township's original land owners. Later in life David went to live in Shirland Township with his half sister Mary and her husband Alexander Miller.
