We learn of Susanna's existence/identity from a biography of her husband, Martin Townsend, in the book "Portrait and Biographical Record of Waukesha County WI." Excerpts follow:

Martin Townsend an early resident of Oconomowoc was born in Massachusetts in 1785. He moved with his parents to New York at an early age. He lived first in Utica NY, then to Attica where he married Susanna Sprout whose father Nathaniel Sprout was a Revolutionary War soldier and pioneer of the Genesee Valley.

Martin moved to Wisconsin in 1846. His son Dr. Hosea B. Townsend had gone there in 1845, but ended up moving to Coldwater MI. Martin's older son, Amos, went to Wisconsin in 1847. Amos died 14 Apr 1888; his wife had died in 1887.

Martin Townsend died at Amos's on 25 Dec 1857. Martin's wife had died many years before the family came west.

Of Martin's family only two were living in 1894, Miss Rachel C. Townsend of Oconomowoc, and Dr. Hosea B. Townsend of Coldwater MI.

There were six children who grew to adulthood; two brothers and four sisters.

Martin was esteemed as honorable and upright.

On 5 May 1844, Phebe Hendricks (Eastman) Sprout (widow of Nathaniel Sprout III) who was living in Geneva, Jennings County, IN, wrote a letter to her son Rowley Sprout in Michigan. She said that her son-in-law Charles Toms (married to Phebe Humility Sprout) had returned from New York the previous August (1843). She told Rowley that his (widowed) Grandmother Sprout (nee Azuba Cummings) was living at Martin Townsend's, and that Rowley's uncle Hosea B. Sprout was near the red school house.

Why Azuba Sprout would be living with a one-time neighbor (per census), rather than a relative nagged at me. Over the past several years I've tried to discover Martin Townsend's identity, but he disappeared from Attica NY after the 1840 census. Then I found this biography of Martin in Wisconsin, and Susanna made an appearance.

The Nathaniel Sprout Jr.'s were known for being remiss about recording the births of their children in Hardwick, Worchester, MA. Family history notes this indifference, adding that it was consequently impossible to give a completely accurate accounting of the family.

Now, in 2018, we find another potential piece of the Azuba (Cummings) and Nathaniel Sprout Jr. puzzle. The Society of Mayflower Descendants Five Generations Project, with their expertise, will make the final decision, and I will update Susanna's memorial accordingly. UPDATE: In April 2019 the General Society of Mayflower Descendants Historian General, Marjorie K. Hurtuk, approved the addition of Susanna Sprout to the family of Nathaniel and Azuba (Cummings) Sprout.

Susanna, as Susannah Sprout Townsend, has a cenotaph in LaBelle Cemetery in WI; this memorial gives the date of her birth. Her original Find A Grave memorial in Schaub Cemetery in Attica says she died on 16 Mar 1832; the cenotaph reports 29 Mar 1828 . The year 1832 is correct. Susanna's daughter, E. Jenette (Townsend) Hinkley, was born 16 Mar 1832. It may be that Susanna died that same day, but she may have lived for a brief period after Jenette's birth, and died on 29 Mar 1832 instead.
