Helen E. Benjamin, 86, of Bemidji, died Dec. 24, 2002, at North Country Regional Hospital in Bemidji. The funeral will be at Olson-Schwartz Funeral Home. Interment will be in Pine Grove Cemetery in Cass Lake.

She was born Dec. 16, 1916 in Milnor, ND, to Oscar and Irva Mae (Jordan) Hopland. She lived in North Dakota until her family moved to Guthrie in 1927. She graduated from Bemidji High School in 1934 and worked in Bemidji and Cass Lake. On May 16, 1945 she married Walter Benjamin and the couple resided in Cass Lake. It was also in 1945 that Helen's young niece came to live with them. She was treated like a daughter. In October of 1950 they traded their home in town for a farm near Cass Lake, where they farmed for 27 years. In 1977 they sold the farm and bought a home near Bemidji. Walter died in 1992 and in 1994 she moved to Baker Park Apartments, where she has lived since.

She is survived by her son-in-law Gary (Kathy) Cavallin of Two Harbors; three grandsons; five great-grandchildren; four sisters; Ethel Chinn of Babbitt, Marion (Clyde) Vezina of Duluth, Lorraine (Myron) Nyberg of Cass Lake, and Orla (Luther) Iverson of Silver Bay and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; her brother Orvin; her sister Marjorie ( in infancy); and her niece Sandy Cavallin and grandson Joseph. (Bemidji Pioneer Dec. 27, 2002)
