Irene Disbrow was born in Oxford Junction, Jones County, Iowa, to Martin A. and Mary [Lincoln] Disbrow. The family found great prosperity in the wood products business and so became very wealth.

Irene and her future husband, Leon DuBois grew up in the same farming community and were married about five years after he completed his studies at Northwestern University School of Dentistry. Soon after marriage in 1909, they moved to Portland, Oregon where her husband started his dental practice in downtown Portland. They remained in Portland, for the rest of their lives. This was four years after the successful Lewis and Clark Exposition. In 1913, the DuBois family moved into their newly constructed home located at 5739 S.E. Salmon Street, in the Mt. Tabor district of S.E. Portland. It is a two story home with a large front porch, with basement, and garage set in the back, on an over size lot.

In the 1920's, they funded the purchase of property and then the construction of the Mardu Apartments at, 1631 SW Yamhill St. Portland. Which provided a niche for newly landed city dwellers that wished to be centrally located but did not want to purchase single family housing. The 39 units in the building were designed to serve as two room efficiency units which featured modern amenities such as hot and cold water, electric lights, separate kitchens and bathrooms, and, most importantly, privacy.

Irene passed away at about 40 years of age, in Jan, 1929, at Long Beach, Los Angeles, California, at about 40 years of age.

Dr. Leon L. DuBois was a successful downtown, Portland, Oregon, dentist. His private practice continued until about, 1945. Retiring, before 1947, when he was 64 years old.
