Ruth Darlene (Mercer) McMurtrey was born to Alta & L.D. Mercer on February 13, 1932, in rural Thomas County, NE. Ruth was the eighth child of 12. She passed away November 22, 2013 in Scottsbluff, NE.

Ruth graduated in 1947 from Thomas County High School in Thedford, NE. She attended two summers of college at Chadron State College and taught for two years in a rural Cherry County school.

June 24, 1950 Ruth was united in marriage to Daniel McMurtrey. After the wedding they moved to Albuquerque, NM. When Dan got out of the service, they returned to the Valentine area. To this marriage three children were born: Gail, Jennifer and Mike. Ruth was a homemaker who enjoyed making jelly, pickles and cinnamon rolls that she loved sharing with friends and family.

Ruth was a member of the United Methodist Church and served in several ways. She was the head of the funeral dinner committee, sang in the adult choir and taught the adult Sunday school class from June of 1985 until February 2013.

Ruth traveled to Disney World with Gail, Laura, Daisy & Teara in 1986. She traveled to Alaska to visit family. In 1996, she went to Mesa, AZ for her niece Blanch's wedding. Ruth also accompanied her daughter Gail to Hawaii and Great Britain.

Ruth is survived by her 3 children: Gail, Jennifer & husband Ed Rikli; and Mike & wife Robin; 4 grandchildren: Laura & husband Steve Longo, Dana Rikli & wife Emily, Daisy McMurtrey & Teara McMurtrey-Jones; 3 great grandsons: William & Zachary Longo and Jackson Rikli; 3 sisters: Ila Reiser, Alta Chilson & Linda Galusha; brothers Stanley & Loy Mercer; 4 sisters-in-law and many cousins, nieces & nephews.

Preceding her in death were her husband, parents, one sister and five brothers.

Funeral services were held at 10:00 AM, Wednesday, November 27, 2013 at the United Methodist Church in Valentine with Pastor Corey Jenkins officiating. Burial followed at Kilgore Cemetery, Kilgore, NE. Memorials may be made to the Valentine United Methodist Church. Online guest book is available at www.HolmesFH.com.
