He entered the service on 3 Mar 1950 and was discharged in May 1952. He served as Military Police at Sandia Base, Albuquerque, NM and at Eniwotok in the Marshall Islands for the atomic bomb test in 1950-51, Operation Greenhouse. He returned to New Mexico to do security work in the atomic bomb plant. From book, "The War Years" by Mildred Gates.

Daniel McMurtrey is buried in Kilgore Cemetery, Kilgore, Cherry Co., Nebraska. There are two markers for him; a military marker is located several feet east of the marker he shares with his wife, Ruth D.
