Mary ? Elizabeth S. B. (Cree) (Carman) (Shuster) HOHENSTEIN (1847-1917)

Note: My use of "Mary?" in Elizabeth's name comes from the death certificate of her daughter Rebecca P. (Carman) HARTLEY (1866-1907) that lists Rebecca's parents as "Sherman & Mary CARMON."

* father: William D. CREE (1821-1888). William is born in Scotland, and both his mother & father were born in Scotland, too. In 1832, William (11) arrives in Philadelphia, (Philadelphia), Pennsylvania, USA. In Philadelphia, William marries Jane COPE, works as a machinist, and raises a family.

* mother: Jane (Cope) CREE (1820-1906). Jane is born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA; both her mother & father were born in England. Jane sometimes works sewing "trimmings." The 1900 Federal Census records that Jane has nine children.

* William & Jane have nine children:
1.) Mary? Elizabeth S. B. (Cree) (Carman) (Shuster) HOHENSTEIN (1847-1917) marries Civil War Veteran, U.S. Private (for twelve days), Company A, Pennsylvania 20th Infantry Regiment, Sheppard Odgen CARMAN (1843-1965); they have one daughter Rebecca P. (Carman) HARTLEY (1866-1907) who is born six months after Sheppard dies from a compound fracture of femur. Sheppard worked as a salesman, then a Union soldier, then a driver, then a teamster. As a widow, Elizabeth remarries Philip SHUSTER (1846-unknown/after 1910); they have one daughter Lillian U. "Lillie" (Shuster) VIRTUE (1879-1942) and one stillborn son (1883). Philip works as a butcher. Philip & Elizabeth divorce. Elizabeth remarries Harry HOHENSTEIN (1859-1914). Harry works as a tin smith, then as a painter in a machine shop. Both of Harry's parents were born in Germany. The 1910 Federal Census lists Harry & Elizabeth as married, living in separate residences.
2.) Margaret "Maggie" (Cree) (McNichol) DULBS (1849-unknown/after 1910) marries Joseph H. McNICHOL (1848-1891); they have seven children. Joseph works as a plumber. Joseph's father was born in Scotland; mother was born in Ireland. As a widow, Maggie remarries Henry DULBS (1855-unknown); Henry's father was born in France; mother was born in Germany. Henry works as a gilder in a picture shop.
3.) Isabella (Cree) DOUGLASS (1853-1904) marries unknown DOUGLASS (unknown-before 1900). The 1900 Federal Census is blank for Isabella's number of children.
4.) John D. CREE (1855-1906) works as a brick layer.
5.) Jane "Jenny" (Cree) BENSON (1856-1890) marries William Alfred BENSON (1853-1922). Sad stuff: so far, I have found records for seven children by Jennie; five die very young. Another dies at sixteen from accidental drowning. Jennie and her baby James both die in childbirth in 1890. As a widower, William remarries the widow Laura Virginia (Stevenson) (Graham) BENSON (1866-1956); William has four more children with Laura. William works as a carpenter. Laura's first-husband was Samuel Nobel GRAHAM (unknown-1887); Samuel & Laura had two children.
6.) Josephine (Cree) JAMES (1860-1907) marries Walter A. JAMES (1855-1942); they have five children. Walter works as a brick layer.
7.) Clara CREE (1861/2-1864)
8.) Floretta CREE (1862-unknown/possibly before 1870). Floretta never appears on census records with the family. All I have found for Floretta is one birth record. Maybe the truth is that Clara and Floretta are the same person? If so, then the ninth child of William & Jane is unknown.
9.) Catherine J. "Kate" (Cree) BARKER (1865-unknown/after 1940) marries John W. BARKER, Sr. (1864-unknown/after 1940); they have seven children. John works as a machinist.

* Elizabeth is born June ??, 1847; Philadelphia, (Philadelphia), Pennsylvania, USA.

* February 15, 1864; Church of the Evangelist (Catholic), Philadelphia, (Philadelphia), Pennsylvania, USA
Elizabeth (16) marries U.S. Private (in service 12 days), Company A, Pennsylvania 20th Infantry Regiment, Sheppard Ogden CARMAN (19). Sheppard was a salesman and a Union soldier. After marriage, he works as a driver, then as a teamster. Sheppard dies December 23, 1865, from a compound fracture of his femur; Elizabeth is eighteen years old, becomes a widow, and is pregnant.

* June 18, 1866; Philadelphia, (Philadelphia), Pennsylvania, USA
Elizabeth (19) gives birth, six months after Sheppard's death, to her first of three children on record:
1.) Rebecca P. (Carman) HARTLEY (1866-1907) marries Howard Jerome HARTLEY, Sr. (1868-1929); they have eight children. Howard, Sr. works as a plumber. As a widower, Howard, Sr. remarries Sarah J. (Goldschmidt) (Hartley) McVEY (1880-1952); Howard, Sr. has two more children with Sarah. Both of Sarah's parents were born in The Netherlands. As a widow, Sarah remarries Joseph F. McVEY (unknown-before 1940).

* unknown date; unknown location
As a widow, Elizabeth remarries Philip SHUSTER (1846-unknown/after 1910). Philip works as a butcher.

Note: the Philadelphia Directories of the 1870s do list an Elizabeth SHUSTER who works as a grocer. But I found out that this is a second Elizabeth SHUSTER who is the wife of Christian H. SHUSTER.

* Philip & Elizabeth have two children on record:
2.) Lillian U. "Lillie" (Shuster) VIRTUE (1879-1942) marries Edward F. VIRTUE, Sr. (1872-1932); they have three children. Edward, Sr. works as a machinist.
3.) (stillborn son) SHUSTER (1883-1883)

* Philip & Elizabeth divorce. The 1910 Federal Census for Philadelphia Ward 32, (Philadelphia), Pennsylvania, USA, lists: Philip SHUSTER (63, boarder, divorced).

* about 1889
Elizabeth (42) remarries Harry HOHENSTEIN (1859-1914); he is 30 years old. Harry's parents were both born in Germany. The 1910 Federal Census records Harry & Elizabeth as "married," residing at separate addresses. Separate addresses maybe to save time and money on Harry's commute-to-work expenses, maybe for other reasons -- who knows.

* Interesting note: In each of the Federal Censuses of 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880, (1890 was destroyed by a fire), 1900, and 1910, Elizabeth is recorded as living either with her parents or with one of her sister's families. Each year she is in Philadelphia, except 1850 when she is in Southwark.

* The 1900 Federal Census notes that Elizabeth (53) has two children alive, as of 1900, out of two born.

* The 1910 Federal Census notes that Elizabeth (62) is in her third marriage, but this census is blank for her number of children alive out of how many born.

* Elizabeth dies November 22, 1917; Philadelphia, (Philadelphia), Pennsylvania, USA
Æ about 70 years, 5 months
Cause of death: unknown
Pennsylvania Death Indices for 1917 has two possible matches:
1.) HOHENSTEIN, Marie; 124372; Phila.; Nov. 26.
2.) HOKENSTEIN (yes -- spelled "HOKENSTEIN" with a K), Elizabeth; 124427; Phila.; Nov. 22.

* Elizabeth is buried either November 24, 1917, or September 16, 1918; Westminster Cemetery, Bala Cynwyd, (Montgomery), Pennsylvania, USA.

* Cemetery records say "Dep'd in R.T. crypt 35. . . 9-16-18 Remd to lot." I called the cemetery office to ask what this means. Over the phone, they explained that this may mean Elizabeth was not buried until the cemetery was paid-in-full.
