William D. CREE (c.1820-1888)

* father: born in Scotland

* mother: born in Scotland

* siblings: unknown

* William is born about 1820; Scotland.

* 1832; Philadelphia, (Philadelphia), Pennsylvania, USA
William (12) arrives in America.

* April 14, 1846; Saint Paul's Episcopal Church, 225 South 3rd Street, Philadelphia, (Philadelphia), Pennsylvania, USA
William (26) marries Jane (Cope) CREE (25.5). Both of Jane's parents were born in England. William works as a machinist as they raise a family in Philadelphia. Jane sometimes works sewing "trimmings." The 1900 Federal Census records that Jane has nine children.

Note: Philadelphia Directories reveal that there was both a "William & Jane CREE" and a "William & Jane McCREA" living in Philadelphia in the same years. At first, this did confuse me a bit.

* William & Jane have nine children:
1.) Mary? Elizabeth S. B. (Cree) (Carman) (Shuster) HOHENSTEIN (1847-1917) marries Civil War Veteran, U.S. Private (for twelve days), Company A, Pennsylvania 20th Infantry Regiment, Sheppard Odgen CARMAN (1843-1965); they have one daughter Rebecca P. (Carman) HARTLEY (1866-1907) who is born six months after Sheppard dies from a compound fracture of femur. Sheppard worked as a salesman, then a Union soldier, then a driver, then a teamster. As a widow, Elizabeth remarries Philip SHUSTER (1846-unknown/after 1910); they have one daughter Lillian U. "Lillie" (Shuster) VIRTUE (1879-1942) and one stillborn son (1883). Philip works as a butcher. Philip & Elizabeth divorce. Elizabeth remarries Harry HOHENSTEIN (1859-1914). Harry works as a tin smith, then as a painter in a machine shop. Both of Harry's parents were born in Germany. The 1910 Federal Census lists Harry & Elizabeth as married, living in separate residences.
2.) Margaret "Maggie" (Cree) (McNichol) DULBS (1849-unknown/after 1910) marries Joseph H. McNICHOL (1848-1891); they have seven children. Joseph works as a plumber. Joseph's father was born in Scotland; mother was born in Ireland. As a widow, Maggie remarries Henry DULBS (1855-unknown); Henry's father was born in France; mother was born in Germany. Henry works as a gilder in a picture shop.
3.) Isabella (Cree) DOUGLASS (1853-1904) marries unknown DOUGLASS (unknown-before 1900). The 1900 Federal Census is blank for Isabella's number of children.
4.) John D. CREE (1855-1906) works as a brick layer.
5.) Jane "Jenny" (Cree) BENSON (1856-1890) marries William Alfred BENSON (1853-1922). Sad stuff: so far, I have found records for seven children by Jennie; five die very young. Another dies at sixteen from accidental drowning. Jennie and her baby James both die in childbirth in 1890. As a widower, William remarries the widow Laura Virginia (Stevenson) (Graham) BENSON (1866-1956); William has four more children with Laura. William works as a carpenter. Laura's first-husband was Samuel Nobel GRAHAM (unknown-1887); Samuel & Laura had two children.
6.) Josephine (Cree) JAMES (1860-1907) marries Walter A. JAMES (1855-1942); they have five children. Walter works as a brick layer.
7.) Clara CREE (1861/2-1864)
8.) Floretta CREE (1862-unknown/possibly before 1870). Floretta never appears on census records with the family. All I have found for Floretta is one birth record. Maybe the truth is that Clara and Floretta are the same person? If so, then the ninth child of William & Jane is unknown.
9.) Catherine J. "Kate" (Cree) BARKER (1865-unknown/after 1940) marries John W. BARKER, Sr. (1864-unknown/after 1940); they have seven children. John works as a machinist.

* William dies February 19, 1888; Philadelphia, (Philadelphia), Pennsylvania, USA.
Æ Death Certificate says "67 years"
Cause of death: pneumonia com[plicating?] aortic dilatation

* William is buried February 22, 1888; Machpelah Cemetery (established 1830, DEFUNCT since 1895); South 10th Street, South 11th Street, Kimball Street, and Washington Avenue; Philadelphia; (Philadelphia); Pennsylvania; USA.

* 1895
The land for Machpelah Cemetery is repurposed, and its interments are removed to either:
1.) Mount Moriah Cemetery (established 1855, struggling since 2011), Yeadon, (Delaware county), Pennsylvania, USA
2.) Graceland/North Mount Moriah Cemetery (established 1774, DEFUNCT since 1960/4); Baily Road, Rose Street, North Longacre Boulevard, Ruskin Lane; Yeadon; (Delaware county); Pennsylvania; USA
3.) probably other cemeteries I will never know of, too

* 1938 to 1960/4
Graceland/North Mount Moriah Cemetery is basically abandoned by its owners and is abused by local residents. In 1960/4, Yeadon makes the decision to remove the remaining grave markers and remove the interments to Lawnview Cemetery, Rockledge, (Montgomery), Pennsylvania, USA.

* 1904 to present day
Lawnview Cemetery, Rockledge, (Montgomery), Pennsylvania, USA, is established in 1904. Lawnview Cemetery accepts reinterments from:
1.) Graceland/North Mount Moriah Cemetery (established 1774, DEFUNCT since 1960/4); Baily Road, Rose Street, North Longacre Boulevard, Ruskin Lane; Yeadon; (Delaware county); Pennsylvania; USA
2.) Odd Fellows Cemetery (established in 1849, DEFUNCT since 1951 -- land went to build Raymond Rosen Housing Development); West Diamond Street, North 22nd Street, North 24th Street, West Dauphin Street; Philadelphia, (Philadelphia), Pennsylvania, USA
Note: some from Odd Fellows Cemetery were reinterred in Mount Peace Cemetery, Philadelphia, (Philadelphia), Pennsylvania, USA, which is also managed by Lawnview Cemetery.
3.) Monument Cemetery (CLOSED in 1955); West Norris Street, West Montgomery Avenue, North Broad Street, North 17th Street; Philadelphia; (Philadelphia); Pennsylvania; USA
