Emma Dene Thorn Johnston, daughter of Noah and Lottie Thorn, was born May 16, 1914 in Eagle Grove and died February 2, at the age of 58 years, eight months, and 17 days.

She attended schools in Eagle Grove and was united in marriage to Thomas William Johnston who died in June of 1972.

To this union four children were born: Lionel, Judy, Tom, and Bob.

In recent years she had been employed by some of the local businesses and her unexpected death came as a result of the tragic explosion in the Chatter Box Café where she was working at the time.

She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, and a brother. Also, by her son, Lionel, who died in July of 1967.

She is survived by two sons: Tom of Eagle Grove, Bob of Iowa City; and one daughter, Judy (Mrs. Scott Weland) of Eagle Grove; and six grandchildren.

Services were held Tuesday, February 6 at the Kastler-Babcock Funeral Home. Dr. Lloyd Meyer, pastor of the Church of the Open Bible officiated. Burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery.
