He married (1) Agnes Kidd, 7 May 1851, Dysart, Fife, Scotland, a short lived union.
He married (2) Margaret Braid, 31 Jan 1852, also in Scotland, that marriage also unsuccessful, as he shortly afterward made preparations to immigrated to America with his brother, John Forbes Jr. Within a year, Margaret did not come with him.
James left for America (listed on the passenger roster as "a single man") along with his brother, John Jr. and his family (John had joined the church in 1845.)
On the 21st of February 1853 they boarded the sailing vessel, The International in the 65th Company of Saints headed for Zion. There were 425 Saints, under the Presidency of Elder Christopher Arthur and the ship under the command of Captain Brown.
It took nearly a week for all to board, the tug boats to tow them out of the port of Liverpool into the River Mersey, and where at the mouth, they cast anchors and waited for a fair wind to carry them into the Ocean. The voyage is recorded as beginning 28 February 1853.

They were assigned to the Jacob Gates Company led by Captain Jacob Gates which consisted of 262 individuals and 33 wagons which began its' journey from the outfitting post a Keokuk on 3 June 1853 and arrived in the Valley of Salt Lake, from the 26th through the 30th of September. John, Janette, Davinie are listed; James may have been with them and his name missed, or because he was traveling as a lone man, he may have helped another unnamed train.
They all arrived in the Salt Lake Valley between the 26th and 30th of September 1853.
They settled at Kays Creek area in Davis County. It would later become Layton and Kaysville, Utah.
James married (3) Mary Norris, the widow of Thomas Evans, who had five small children. Her husband had died in 1857 at Kaysville; Mary and James were married 21 September 1860 at Layton, Davis, Utah. They were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple 23 November 1868.
Their children are - Catherine Forbes, Jane Forbes, Margaret Hannah Forbes, James Henry Forbes, John William Forbes.
